Hello Lee. Yes, I have heard reports where tripods can be confiscated during airport check-in, if you place them in carry on luggage. We always pack our tripod in a checked suitcase to avoid this and haven’t had any issues. That’s awesome that you travel carry-on only – we usually have enough things that can’t go into carry on that we have at least one checked bag. Cheers, Julie

I just discovered EarthTrekkers and am loving your work . . . great writing, content, photos, and recommendations. I noted your discussion of camera tripods in this article and have to ask: has airport security never troubled you about that item in your many travels? In 2013 while boarding a flight to the U.S. from Dusseldorf security personnel confiscated a camera monopod I was carrying because they considered it a potential weapon. Yes, I could have put it in checked baggage but I only travel with a carry-on. That event made me reluctant ever since to carry camera mono or tripods. I did recently get a small JOBY Gorillapod which, so far, has not drawn any negative attention but which I find a poor substitute for the monopod in many shooting situations.

I love the recommendations, especially for the lenses! I just got the Canon R5 Mark II for Christmas and will be trying it out on our upcoming trip to Costa Rica. Thanks for taking the time to write in! Cheers, Julie

If you want to lighten your backpack a bit. I recommend looking into the RF 14-35 f4 and the RF 24-105 f4. You get the additional coverage up to 105, and for landscape photography you don’t need the extra f-stop down to f2.8. I have the EF 100-400 mm, but the RF 100-500 is at the top of my wish list.

When I am out and don’t want to carry or use my tripod, I will shoot in Manual or Aperture Value (AV) mode use Auto ISO. With either camera, I use Adobe Lightroom or Bridge to successfully remove the noise in higher ISO images. I will also shoot hand held exposure brackets using the high burst mode. If I am shooting blue hour or using an ND filter to smooth the water, I will always use a tripod. I hope this helps!

Hello Lori. I have no experience with the R7 but I do have the R5 and really like it. I also have the Canon 5D Mark III and Mark IV cameras. The R5 does much better in low light with less noise at the higher ISO’s. The noise is still there, just not to the same degree as with those other cameras. I don’t really notice the noise until I get to 4000 or above and then use Lightroom after shooting, as well. My biggest complaint with the R5 is that it does not geotag photos, which I think it should do given this camera’s big price tag. It is also quite heavy. But I have been very happy with it in low light conditions. Cheers, Julie
