Yes, we flew around the world in 2014 and 2015. Some of these charities do offset emissions. Plus, in the past 6 years, we have done what we can to minimize flights. To get to some destinations, flying is the only way to go, other than a very long boat trip. We take 6 to 8 week trips to one region of the world to avoid taking lots of long haul flights (rather than taking multiple 10 to 14 day trips). There are companies that you can pay to offset your carbon emissions as well. Cheers, Julie

Didn’t you fly around the world? Or is there a way to offset the emissions, because – please don’t take any offense at this – it seems a bit backwards to donate a fraction of your net income to an environmental charity, only to then give money to airline companies which – by their nature – increase greenhouse gas emissions.

The reason I’m asking is because I recently got a job offer to work teaching PSHE to students in South Korea, but I really care about the environment at the same time and don’t want to give money to these organisations.

We worry about those environmental impacts too. We’ve been lucky in that we can travel long term in one place, taking a minimum of flights to get there. For example, there have been five summers where we spent 6 weeks in Europe, taking one direct flight to our starting point, one direct flight home, and sometimes one short flight within Europe. In one 6 week trip, this essentially gives us four 10 day trips with just one long haul round trip flight (and multiple that by the 5 times we have done it and it really adds up). Very rarely will we take a long haul flight to a short trip to one destination (for the most part, if we fly to Europe from the USA, we plan to stay in Europe for at least 4 weeks). Doing this is of course harder for those who can’t get an extended time off of work, but once in Europe, it’s easy to use public transportation, which also minimizes your carbon footprint. So, if you can travel for an extended time, its beneficial not only for the environment (to take less flights) but it is also a very nice way to immerse yourself in a place since you get to stay there longer. Cheers, Julie
