Hello Yeşim. That’s wonderful that you are planning a world tour! We have an article about how much does it cost to travel around the world, with basic guidelines and how to predict prices. For one year around the world for two people, you could do it from anywhere between 40,000 and 70,000 USD. The biggest factors are where you go (of course some countries are much more expensive than others), how many flights you take, and whether or not you are a budget, midrange, or luxury traveler. We did the trip as budget/midrange travelers. If your son is under 12, a lot of his entrance fees will be reduced/free so that is helpful (our kids were 11 or under for most of the trip…Tyler turned 12 with about 4 months to go). As you plan your trip, let us know if you have any questions. Cheers, Julie

I came across your amazing read when searching for ideas and tips for a world tour that I plan to do in 2027 with my son.

Thank you so much for all the details, which will help us get organised for this once-in-a-lifetime experience. What cost do we have to consider do you reckon, as guideline only of course.

I shall keep reading your blog.

Lots of Love from Istanbul, Türkiye….

Hello Sue. That’s very exciting that you are planning a trip around the world! South Africa is a country that we sometimes felt unsafe, hearing about car jackings and crime. We never experienced any issues ourselves, but they are there, and our visit was now 10 years ago so I don’t know if this has changed. But other than that, we’ve generally felt safe while traveling, as far as crime is considered (I got Dengue Fever in India and some roads around the world can be sketchy). As for guides, we met Indra the day before we started the trek and he was amazing. In general, we’ve had excellent guides for various things we’ve done, whether it was a multi day tour or 2 hour tour through the Colosseum. We booked all of these guides through GetYourGuide or researching tour companies, but knew nothing about the particular guide that would be assigned to us. I think as long as you pick a reputable tour company, there is a very good chance you will have similar positive experiences. I hope this helps and please let me know if you have any other questions as you plan your amazing adventure! Cheers, Julie

Very grateful to have this as I start planning a trip around the world post retirement. Currently I am planning to travel alone, a few questions spring up for me here…was there anywhere you went that you would not have felt comfortable traveling alone and/or your mom or mother-in-law traveling alone? I’ve traveled a lot already in life, mostly in Europe though…so I’m really looking forward to Asia and New Zealand is somewhere I’ve wanted to go for many years. Looking forward to planning.

I noticed you had a few tour guides in certain countries, you mentioned Indra and I thought maybe one other that I don’t recall. Were those guides recommendations from people you knew who had traveled before or when you and Tim were researching or how did you come to know of them? I have done some research on Africa as I was thinking of doing a safari…but now I’m thinking of taking many months and moving around like your family did. When I was doing Africa research I did find some folks who advertised as local tour guides. If you have any tips or recommendations where you did use tour guides, would love to know of them.

Thanks again….I’ve used your site multiple times in the past. Climbing Mt. Zas in Naxos…those instructions were gold!
Sue
